Friday March 24th 2:40-3:25pm

Youth Activism for Community Education & Empowerment in Chile

Workshop Description

This workshop will be led by students from Chile who are visiting the U.S. as Youth Ambassadors through a one-month exchange program focused on multiculturalism and civic activism. During the first part of the workshop, the group will share some of the strengths and challenges they see in their communities in Chile, and discuss how they as youth have been involved in addressing local issues and how they hope to work for change in the future. During the second part of the workshop, presenters and attendees will engage in an interactive discussion comparing issues related to education, community empowerment, and social justice in the U.S. and Chile. Attendees will be invited to share their own experiences and brainstorm strategies for how young activists all over the world can engage and inspire their peers around a cause.

Creating a School-wide Project to Help End Poverty

Asa Mercer International Middle School

We will share how we learned about the UN's sustainable development goals in our class, researched the topic of poverty, shared our learning with the rest of our school, and got everyone involved with the Students Rebuild organization to learn about the issue and take action. Our class helped our community raise over $1500 for Student Rebuild's efforts. We would like to show other students how they could take similar action at their schools.

Workshop Description

Sustainability Statement

YAP students will spend their time in Seattle developing plans for community action projects that they will implement once they return to their home countries

Sustainability Statement

We did this project as part of a one-semester course. This particular project might not be continued by us, but we have now created a foundation for future Global Leadership classes to take on similar projects. We students now know how to organize and take action as we enter high school.

Women in the Media

Global Visionaries- Gender Equity Team

Our workshop will consist of activities that will portray women's media. We will analyze the ways in which women are objectified, sexualized, underrepresented, and overlooked in all forms of media. Then we will have a discussion to talk about reactions to the activity, personal experiences, and how we can move forward in combating this injustice.

Workshop Description

Sustainability Statement

To continue the efforts to combat the negative portrayal of women in media, we will facilitate and provide tools for our participants to continue to pay attention to the issue. These will include The Rep Test and the MissRep Test which grade movies and TV shows on their diversity of roles and ability to allow characters to defy stereotypes. These are important because they allow people to recognize the negative portrayal of women and work to speak out against it. If it isn't seen or recognized it cant be changed!

The Unintended Karma

Chief Sealth International High School
 Technology and Pollution Team

Workshop Description

We see all these environmental damages increasing instead of decreasing. We ask ourselves how it’s gotten to this point. Some of us may even try to do something about it while others don’t feel affected by it. Right now not far from here we have people having to worry about their local river being contaminated and struggling to spread awareness of this and clean it up. Are we the cause, do we do it on purpose, are we aware of the consequences? Some our team member’s loved ones live near the Duwamish River and we want to do something about it. We won’t stand by and not care about our community, and we will be the generation to stand up and speak. We have put together an original video where we answer our question: Are we the villains or is the new technology the villains? Let’s stop ‘The Unintended Karma’.

Sustainability Statement

We keep changing and we have to stay on top of pollution rather than adding more. Each of us has taken a pledge to change the way we think

We want people to think about why we develop new technologies in order to ensure we are not causing unintended consequences, like more pollution. The environment wilabout needs and wants. We hope to inspire participants in our workshop and viewers of our video to make specific changes themselves.

Sustainability Statement

We will be continuing to expand our campaign work with youth of color at the front in the food justice movement.

We will be exploring why social justice work and health are related. This workshop will be an interactive experience where participants will get to dive into the issues that arise when communities of color and low income communities are targeted by junk food and fast food companies and how we can demand more for our communities. We want to hear about how you, your family and your friends health has been impacted by stereotypes in media, lack of access to affordable healthy foods and how we can push back and make change! We can't wait to present with you, eat some things and spark some joy in the food justice movement.
